Author Archives: Cheryl Machat Dorskind

Cheryl Machat Dorskind shares her passion for photography through her books, teaching, fine-art, mentoring, and commissions. In addition to her eBook, Photographing Children Naturally, published by Trey Ratcliff and available exclusively at, Cheryl is he author of two best-selling books, The Art of Handpainting Photographs — considered the definitive guide to traditional darkroom photo painting — and The Art of Photographing Children — the ultimate guide to creating cherished photographs of children. Cheryl Machat Dorskind has also written approximately seventy-five articles for her newspaper column “Picture This” for The Southampton Press. As a college professor, Cheryl Machat Dorskind instructs and mentors students at colleges (LIU, SUNY) and online at the Perfect Picture School of Photography. She also offers Fine Art Mentoring Expertise to photographers and artists worldwide. Cheryl offers Hamptons photo safaris and photo workshops and is also a guest photo instructor teaching color, Adobe Photoshop, camera technique, composition, handpainting, portfolio development, and color management. High-end portrait sessions by Cheryl Machat Dorskind embody the gorgeous natural Hamptons’ light. Whether the setting is at the beach, a park, or a home, the lifestyle posed-but-not-posed images are fluid and rhythmic. Noted internationally for her ethereal misty coastal handpainted photographs and her playful self-portrait Photopaintings, her critically acclaimed fine-art photographs are exhibited regularly, commissioned for book jacket cover art (Ann Beattie’s Chilly Scenes of Winter, Falling in Place, Secrets and Surprises, and Distortions) and are included in many public and private collections. Her corporate clients include Epic Records, Random House, Hamptons magazine, Niche Media, Newsday, The Southampton Press, and The New York Times.

Patron Artist – Feature

This week I am one of four featured artists with this photo as my lead.

patron artist, yoga pose, handpaintedphotograph

Commissioned by a Yoga instructor, this environmental portrait remains a most memorable photo session. This photo was originally captured with Ilford Infrared film, printed in a darkroom on a fiber based gelatin silver print and then painted with washes of oils. Once the oils dried, I scanned the photo and further enhanced the photo painting using the digital brush in Adobe Photoshop CC.

 patron artist, Allen Ginsberg, portraits

Other images included on my portfolio page as a Patron Artist include this portrait of Allen Ginsberg, captured in his East Village apartment in NYC.

patron artist, corporate photo session

This third photo is also included on my Patron Artist portfolio page and is a photo from a 2017 corporate photo session. As a Patron Artist, my work and services are available on their website as well as here, on my own website:
